Links, Documents and Info

Here are some resources for Den Leaders that should be helpful.

The mega FAQ for Den Leaderslots of information gathered and compiled over the years. A great place to start for new leaders.

New Den FAQ Template – A word document template you can customize to hand out for new dens and new families, information about the uniform and books, etc.

First Den Meeting Template – Another word document you can use for a first den meeting. Basic information about the Pack & Den, was used for a Wolf Den, can be updated for any.

Great Games Database – The UK scouting organization has a great online database of games. Indoors, outdoors, different ages, loud, quiet, teams, individual. Some personal favorites are the staring circle and the sleeping pirate.

Tracking Spreadsheets – A series of spreadsheets for each level of scouting, from Tigers through Webelos.  Been very useful in helping to keep track of advancements through ranks, attendance, etc. We also now use Scout Manage to enter all advancements and keep track of awards. It makes it much simpler for the advancements chair.

The Heavy Shoulder Award- A nice color PDF certificate for the ultimate Webelos activity pin earner. Rarely awarded, requires completion of all Webelos activity pins.

Trips & Permission

1. For any day trips within our district (The Liberty District) we don’t need to register a tour permit with the Knox Trail Council. You should get permission slips from a parent. The only exception for this is Tiger scouts, since a parent is required to attend all Tiger scout events with their Tiger.

The Liberty District is:  Ashland, Framingham, Holliston, Maynard, Natick, Sherborn, Stow, Sudbury and Wayland.

2. All overnight Den trips regardless of where you stay require a local tour permit. The tour permit requires the automobile driver information. If you are going overnight, one of your leaders needs to be BALOO trained (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation). It is recommended that as Den Leaders, you have each parent fill out a automobile driver information form so you have the data on file when you need it. Remember to update it each year.

Pinewood Derby

Pinewood Derby cars can be built at Bob’s Woodworking, aka Wooden Toys & Crafts 508-485-6992, located at 655 Farm Road in Marlborough, behind the Creamery. For a few bucks per kid, Bob will cut out the car design on a band saw, provide some sandpaper and paints so that the cars can be made as a Den outing. You will still need to get your cars up to the maximum allowable weight. This can also be done as a subsequent den meeting using weights, a scale and various tools to drill and glue/fasten/stick weight to the cars. For more tips about Pinewood take a looks at these notes or seek out any of the more seasoned den leaders.

Locker access: 26-12-34

Pinewood Derby Pack 39 Rules – the rules we run the Pack 39 Pinewood Derby with. These are the 2008 version (they will change for 2010-11).

Pinewood Derby Best Design Award – the criteria behind the best design awards for each den.
